Who is The Other Road Theater Project?
Stories from A Different Perspective
The Other Road Theater Project is an independent theater company based in Denver, Colorado, producing intimate, thought-provoking plays and musicals for audiences who want theater that asks more of us.
We create bold, actor-driven productions that center language, emotional truth, human contradiction, and the complicated questions people carry into the room with them. Our work is small on purpose and bold by design, built for audiences who believe theater does not need to be massive to feel monumental.
The Other Road exists for the stories that do not take the obvious path. The stories that challenge the norm. The stories that sit in the gray area between certainty and doubt, power and vulnerability, beauty and discomfort, belief and betrayal, grief and survival.
We are here to make theater that looks familiar until it doesn’t.
Our Mission
Our mission is to create intimate, high-stakes theater in the Denver area that challenges audiences to see familiar stories from a different perspective.
The Other Road Theater Project produces artist-led, emotionally intelligent theater that invites audiences into the tension of being human. We are interested in plays that ask difficult questions without offering easy answers. We are drawn to stories where the conflict is not only what happens, but what it means. Who gets power. Who gets believed. Who gets forgiven. Who gets erased. Who gets to tell the story.
We believe theater is at its most powerful when it brings people close enough to feel the stakes. Close enough to watch a thought change in someone’s eyes. Close enough to recognize a part of yourself in a character you did not expect to understand.
Our work is intimate because intimacy makes the truth harder to avoid.
Why “The Other Road”
The name comes from the belief that there is always another way into a story.
There is the expected road, the approved road, the road that tells us what to think before we have had the chance to feel anything for ourselves. Then there is the other road. The more complicated road. The one that asks us to look again. To question the version we inherited. To notice the person standing just outside the frame.
The Other Road Theater Project was created from a deeply personal belief that storytelling can offer a way out of isolation. Many of us have lived through rooms where only one version of truth was allowed. Many of us know what it means to be misunderstood, misread, judged, dismissed, or forced to make ourselves smaller in order to survive.
Theater gives us another room.
A room where complexity is welcome. A room where contradiction is not failure. A room where the person we were taught to fear might become the person we finally understand.
That is the road we are taking.
What We Produce
The Other Road Theater Project produces intimate, high-stakes plays in Denver and the surrounding metro area.
Our programming is centered on stories with psychological depth, emotional urgency, and theatrical immediacy. We are especially drawn to works that explore power, identity, belief, desire, grief, art, memory, family, control, and the dangerous gap between how people see themselves and how they are seen by others.
We produce theater that is:
Intimate
Designed for rooms where the audience can feel the breath, tension, silence, and electricity between performers.
Actor-driven
Focused on language, presence, transformation, and the live exchange between actor and audience.
Thought-provoking
Built around questions that linger after the lights come up.
Visually bold
Created with strong theatrical images, intentional design, and a clear visual point of view.
Emotionally charged
Rooted in the belief that intellectual theater and deeply felt theater do not have to be separate things.
Artist-led
Built by theater makers who believe small-scale work can still be ambitious, rigorous, beautiful, and alive.
We are not trying to compete with spectacle. We are trying to create impact.
Small on Purpose. Bold by Design.
The Other Road Theater Project is intentionally built as a small, flexible, artist-led theater company.
For us, small does not mean less ambitious. It means focused. It means agile. It means the work can be personal, immediate, and alive in the room. It means we can choose plays because they matter, not because they are easy to market. It means we can build productions around connection, trust, and artistic clarity.
We believe some stories are more powerful when there is nowhere to hide.
A small room can make a whisper feel dangerous. A silence can become unbearable. A single glance can change the entire meaning of a scene. This is the kind of theater we are interested in creating.
The kind that does not just ask audiences to watch.
The kind that asks them to lean in.
Theater for People Who Want to Feel and Think
The Other Road Theater Project is for audiences looking for thought-provoking theater in Denver that is emotionally alive, intellectually charged, and deeply human.
We believe the best theater does not tell an audience what to believe. It gives them a room full of people, choices, consequences, contradictions, and questions, then trusts them to wrestle with what they have seen.
We want to create work that people talk about on the drive home. Work that starts conversations. Work that unsettles, comforts, provokes, and surprises. Work that makes someone feel less alone because, for a moment, something they carried quietly was given shape in front of them.
Theater does not have to solve the human condition to make it easier to survive.
Sometimes it only has to name it.
Our Place in Denver Theater
The Other Road Theater Project is proud to be part of the Denver theater community and the larger Colorado arts landscape.
Denver is full of artists, audiences, and storytellers who are hungry for bold work. We believe there is space here for intimate, independent theater that takes risks, honors language, elevates actors, and creates meaningful theatrical experiences without needing to become enormous in order to matter.
Our goal is to contribute to Denver’s theater scene by producing work that feels immediate, personal, and necessary. We want to create a home for audiences who are drawn to intimate drama, complex characters, bold reinterpretations, and alternative theater experiences that challenge the expected path.
We are building this company for the artists who want to dig deeper.
For the audiences who want to be trusted with complexity.
For the people who know that another road has always existed, even when no one else could see it yet.
What We Believe
We believe theater is an act of attention.
We believe complexity is not the enemy of clarity.
We believe intimacy can be more powerful than scale.
We believe a small stage can hold enormous questions.
We believe audiences are smart enough to sit with discomfort, ambiguity, beauty, and contradiction.
We believe artists deserve rooms where their instincts, intelligence, and humanity are respected.
We believe the stories that challenge us are often the ones that change us.
We believe theater can be beautiful without being easy.
We believe the other road is worth taking.
